Smart Metering FAQs:
Quick Answers to Common Questions
Smart metering is transforming how electricity and water usage are monitored and billed. But how does it work, and what does it mean for your property?
In this FAQ guide, we answer the most common questions about smart metering, from installation and accuracy, to billing and benefits. Clear, simple explanations to help you understand the technology and make informed decisions with confidence.
General Smart Meter FAQ’s
What is a smart meter?
A smart meter is a digital device that measures and keeps a record of how much water and / or electricity you use. It provides accurate measurements and sends the consumption directly to your service provider. Metered readings do away with the need for manual readings which can be inaccurate due to errors in manual data capture.
How does a smart meter differ from a traditional meter?
Traditional meters rely on manual readings, while smart meters record usage data and deliver the information automatically. This allows the usage to be tracked constantly from a distance. Should any issues develop, they are picked up on quickly and managed before they get out of hand. Billing is more accurate and efficient.
Can anyone install a smart meter?
Only qualified technicians or certified installers should fit our smart meters. They’ll make sure the installation is done safely and integrates into the system properly,
How often do smart meters have to be replaced?
Republic Metering smart meters last between 10 and 15 years, depending on the environment they’re installed in and the conditions they’re used under. They’ve been designed for long-term reliability.
What happens to my smart meter during a power outage?
Smart electricity meters store the data throughout the outage. As soon as power is restored, they transmit the data. Water meters keep recording the usage even if there’s an interruption in communication.Â
Connectivity & Data
What happens if the signal is lost?
If the signal goes down, the meter keeps monitoring and recording the consumption. As soon as the connection is restored, the consumption data is uploaded to the system automatically, allowing for seamless reporting.
How do I know my data is secure?
Data protection is a high priority. Our transmission protocols are secure as we use advanced encryption to ensure data privacy and protection.
Who has access to my data?
Your data is protected by South Africa’s POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act). Only authorized Republic Metering representatives and the customer can access the data.
Can I download or export my usage data?
Yes. Customers can export usage reports from their online dashboard for personal tracking purposes.
Billing & Savings
How will a smart meter affect my monthly bill?
Smart meters improve billing accuracy by eliminating manual errors and estimated readings. You’ll be billed only for your actual consumption.
How can a smart meter help me save money?
By monitoring your usage patterns, you can identify high-consumption periods and adjust habits to reduce costs. As the meters track usage accurately, you’ll be able to detect leaks early and cut out usage habits that are costing you extra.
Does the system support prepaid and postpaid options?
Absolutely. Republic Metering offers both prepaid and postpaid smart metering solutions tailored to residential, commercial, and industrial setups.
How accurate are your smart meters?
Our meters exceed national metering standards (SANS/IEC) and undergo rigorous testing for precision and reliability.

Contact our billing team. They’ll review your usage date, meter logs, and tariffs to find and resolve any discrepancies.
Installation & Maintenance
How long does installation take?
A typical installation takes between 30 and 60 minutes per meter, depending on site conditions and system type.
Will my water or power be disconnected during installation?
Yes, though outage time varies depending on the number of meters being installed and the complexity of the installation.
Do I need to prepare anything before installation?
Please ensure the area around your existing meter is accessible and free of obstacles for our technicians.
Do smart meters need regular maintenance?
